CIPEC Atlantic Taskforce Meeting June 2008

Hosted by Molson Brewery in Moncton, New Brunswick on June 25, 2008, the CIPEC meeting was an excellent session that included a good mix of technical content, information on NRCan and Efficiency New Brunswick programs, a plant tour and open discussion about future CIPEC business activities. Overall, approximately 30 industry, government and utility representatives took part in the event.  Companies that sent representatives included: ELP Marketing, J.D.Irving Ltd, Master Packaging Inc., Ygeneration Inc., CME, Groupe Savoie Inc., UNB Fredericton, City of Fredericton, Neocon Int'l, Eco-Efficiency Centre, CCNB-PA Ecole des Peches, Connors Bros. Ltd., NS Power Inc., McCain Foods, Northumberland Dairy, Source Atlantic, Amcor, Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters, Source Atlantic, MRHA, Harbour Station, Eddy Group, Correctional Services Canada, DRS Pivotal Power Inc. and Moosehead Breweries.

Overview of the Day:

• Stephane Audet, Plant Engineer kicked off the session with an overview of Molson’s New Brunswick facility.
  
• Kris Kierstead from Efficiency NB gave an update on the Commercial Buildings retrofit program as it pertains to small and medium industrial facilities.
  
• Mike Bujold, Director-Commercial & Industrial Sectors gave an overview of the Efficiency NB Industrial Program for NB’s 40 largest energy users.

• Phil Lefrancois, ELP Marketing, spoke about energy efficient lighting opportunities including what kind of savings companies can expect from lighting retrofits.

• Gerry MacDonell, Technical Manager, NS Eco-Efficiency Centre spoke about companies that have instituted energy-saving practices

• Richard Janecky, Senior Industry Officer Natural Resources Canada, gave an overview of NRCan energy efficiency programs it delivers through the Canadian Industry Program for Energy Conservation (CIPEC).

• Jason Urquhart from Source Atlantic talked about energy efficiency opportunities that can be realized by focusing on compressed air systems.
  
• The day was capped off with a tour of Molson’s newest facility.
  
• The new Atlantic Region TF Chair John Woods was unable to take part because of prior commitments. He sent his regrets and looks forward to taking parting the next Taskforce meetings set to take place in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick in October and November.

Next Steps:
The CIPEC Atlantic Taskforce is organizing energy efficiency information sessions in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick in October and November. The next event will include a mix of government and utility incentive programs, case studies and best practices, and technical information as well as Taskforce business.
