CIPEC Atlantic Taskforce Meeting October 2008

Hosted by Louisiana-Pacific in East River, Nova Scotia on October 29, 2008, the CIPEC meeting was an excellent session that included a good mix of technical content, information on NRCan and Nova Scotia Power programs, a plant tour and open discussion about future CIPEC business activities. Overall, approximately 40 industry, government and utility representatives took part in the event.  Companies that sent representatives included: Louisiana-Pacific, Harris & Roome, Second Source Power, Clearwater Seafoods, Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters, Scanwood Canada, Maritime Paper Products, Farmers Dairy, Michelin, Eco-Efficiency Centre, NewPage Corporation, AbitibiBowater, Source Atlantic, Nova Scotia Power, MapleLeaf Foods, Shaw Resources, Oakhill Sawmill, High Liner Foods, Shaw Pipe, Acadian Seaplants, Comeau Lumber, IMP, Eddy Group, ACA Co-operative, Minas Basin Pulp and Power, Nedco Atlantic, Stantec, Colchester Regional Development Agency and I.B.Storey.

Overview of the Day:

• Michelle Adams, Director of Dalhousie University’s Eco-Efficiency Centre kicked off the session with an overview of the Centre’s programs.

• Bob Eld from Harris & Roome provided insight into energy efficiency opportunities in lighting technology.  He discussed applications for high performance T-8s, T-5s, high-bays and briefly on LEDs.  Bob also had several lighting samples on hand for demonstration purposes.

• Chuck Faulkner P.Eng, Senior Technical Advisor with Nova Scotia Power discussed the incentive programs currently being offered by Nova Scotia Power with a specific focus in the Commercial & Industrial Custom Electrical Efficiency Program.

• Melissa MacIntyre, Jennifer Frotten and Colin Johnston from Louisiana-Pacific provided an overview of the energy efficiency initiatives currently underway at Louisiana-Pacific.  They continued with an equally interesting presentation about the Louisiana-Pacific mill and hardboard production process we would see on our plant tour.

• Melissa, Jennifer and Colin hosted an excellent tour of the Louisiana-Pacific mill before lunch.
• Richard Janecky, Senior Industry Officer Natural Resources Canada, gave an overview of NRCan energy efficiency programs it delivers through the Canadian Industry Program for Energy Conservation (CIPEC).

• Sandy Hines from Second Source Power spoke about energy efficiency opportunities that can be realized using solar hot water heating systems. He had some system components on hand to help demonstrate how simple and effective this technology is.

• The Atlantic Region Task Force chair John Woods was unable to take part because of prior commitments. He sent his regrets and looks forward to taking part in the next meeting set to take place in New Brunswick in November.

Next Steps:
The CIPEC Atlantic Taskforce is organizing energy efficiency information sessions in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick in November and March. The next event will include a mix of government and utility incentive programs, case studies and best practices, and technical information as well as taskforce business.
